課程簡介Course Description

With the transformation of the population structure, Taiwan has entered an aged society. However, issues such as how the elderly and their families face end-of-life and death-related topics (e.g., hospice care, inheritance, and succession) and the expression of sexual awareness among institutionalized elderly are rarely discussed in Taiwan.

Due to the increasing proportion of the elderly population, at the micro level, the needs of elderly individuals and their families for health care and social welfare have become increasingly urgent and diversified. At the macro level, government expenditures on successful aging, health care, long-term care, and elderly economic security have continuously increased. Among these, the introduction of migrant care workers has also affected care arrangements and the quality of care.

Many developed countries and international organizations have successively put forward relevant policy responses to the phenomenon of population aging. In the face of the diverse welfare needs brought about by population aging and potential challenges such as health issues, poverty, protection (against abuse, fraud, and neglect), housing arrangements (social housing, rent subsidies), dementia, long-term care expenditures, and care for conditions like strokes, falls, and traffic accidents, this course will introduce theories and discourses related to geriatric sociology and social work, even involving interdisciplinary cooperation (such as law, criminology, public health, and labor).

In addressing the challenges faced by individuals, families, society, and the country in an aged society (including health, housing arrangements, elderly economic security, long-term care, exercise promotion, leisure, and social participation), through dialogues on elderly-related theories and analysis of current elderly welfare policies, regulations, administration, and practical work, students' sensitivity to elderly welfare issues and their professional knowledge of elderly needs analysis and welfare services will be enhanced. It is also expected that students can apply what they have learned to fields related to elderly welfare work or research.

    Upon completion of this course, it is expected that students will acquire the following competencies regarding aging-related issues and welfare research:

    1. Understand the impacts and challenges of population aging on elderly individuals, families, society, and the government.
    2. Develop critical thinking on current elderly issues—such as the impacts of elderly death, discrimination, elderly protection (against abuse and neglect), strokes, falls, and traffic accidents—as well as their needs (including the expression of sexual awareness, psychological needs, housing arrangements, long-term care, and elderly economic security), along with research, policies, and practical work related to elderly social welfare.
    3. Enhance students' training in research on issues related to elderly welfare services, and foster and improve their ability to apply such knowledge in practical elderly welfare work.

    Course Requirements

    Class issue reports: For the weekly topics (selected by students every 2-3 weeks, depending on class size), students will select articles to report on, and write a summary reflection, commentary, and questions (e.g., the article’s main arguments, findings, strengths, weaknesses, and your own thoughts or doubts). The report must be limited to 15 A4 pages (font size 13) and submitted by 11:30 pm on the final week.

     

    Final report writing: Select a topic related to aging issues and needs in Taiwan, focusing on any (but not limited to) of the following current gerontological and social welfare issues:

    (1) Elderly poverty and economic security;

    (2) The elderly and national pension;

    (3) Social participation, leisure, and education for the elderly;

    (4) Elderly housing (social housing, intergenerational cohabitation, rental management, house-for-pension policies) and elderly care;

    (5) Stress and adaptation of long-term elderly caregivers;

    (6) Community care for the elderly and resource networks;

    (7) Long-term care for the elderly (retention intentions of care workers) and institutional care;

    (8) Ageism, elderly protection, and elder abuse;

    (9) Migrant care workers (care quality and training support).

    Explore the importance of the chosen topic (current status, problems, and elderly needs), examine corresponding social welfare systems and service implementations in Taiwan and abroad, and propose personal thoughts and suggestions.

    Students must collect at least 10 relevant domestic and international literature, write the report in an article-style format, and present it via PPT (or other creative formats) at the end of the semester. The presentation time for each individual, group (for those with undecided research topics), or person is 20-25 minutes, with 5 minutes open for class discussion. The written report must be uploaded to Moodle by 11:30 pm on June 18, with a length limit of 15-20 pages (using standard Kai font, size 12, 1.5-line spacing, and 2.5 cm margins on all sides).

    The presentation and report content may include (but can be creatively expanded based on the topic) the following subheadings:

    1. Introduction (importance of the problem or issue)
    2. Current status analysis or literature review (introduction to needs or systems, relevant regulations, etc.)
    3. Foreign policies or research methods (based on collected literature)
    4. Discussion or future outlook (suggestions for policy or practical reforms)
