Students are provided with general knowledge of the country Vietnam, its geography, people, history and institutions, thought and religions, art and architecture, and cultural values as a base to explain different cultural aspects such as the relationship between humans and nature, social environment.
Students are introduced to some basic elements of Vietnamese cultures (such as manufacturing culture, cuisine, beliefs, holidays and festivals, wedding and funeral customs, folk music) to establish their awareness of the development of modern Vietnam while preserving traditional values and receiving new ones.
This course invites students into a wide array of ideas, issues, and perspectives encountered in modern Vietnamese society.

During the course, students are exposed to a diverse world of ideas and viewpoints about Vietnamese culture, history, and society, some of them could find some ideas and viewpoints new, interesting, yet a bit strange to them. The main purpose of this course is to give students access to new layers of knowledge about Vietnamese culture, history, and society, sometimes far beyond what they have known, so that students can assess others’ interpretations with an open but critical mind. After the course, students will be able to understand:

Students are expected to review all assigned materials before class to maximize in-class time for practice and discussion. All assignments must be submitted to the instructor via email by the specified deadlines. Final grades will be calculated based on the following components:
