This course aims at assisting students establish a broad view on how language works by understanding the fundamental knowledge about language and the similarities and differences across languages. A scientific method for the study of language, specifically of language form, language meaning, and language in context will be introduced. The following topics are to be covered for the first semester: The nature of language, animal communications, the words of language, language and structure, language and meaning, and the sounds of language.
