本課程旨在探討全球化與東亞福利國家之間的關係。我們將特別著重東亞國家社會福利政策的歷史以及制度發展，藉由探討主要福利政策的理論，我們將以比較的視野分析東亞國家重要的社會議題以及各個福利國家回應的方式。This course provides an overview of social rights and redistributive justice, especially the historical and institutional evolution of social policies in East Asia. We will explore the relationship between globalization and the welfare state, as well as the theories and approaches to the study of the development and transformation of the welfare state in a comparative perspective.

本課程主要的目標在於幫助學生以比較的視野分析東亞福利國家的發展。我們將探索以下問題：在全球化、新自由主義的浪潮之下，當代福利國家如何回應全球化因應而生的挑戰？我們該如何理解東亞福利國家的發展模式？當代東亞福利國家如何處理社會中的經濟不平等、性別議題以及世代正義的議題？
The main objective of this course is to understand the unique (or shared) aspects of the East Asian welfare state in a comparative perspective. Amongst the main questions that will be explored in the course are the following: What is the role of the welfare state in the globalizing world? What explains the unique trajectory of the East Asian welfare state in a comparative perspective? What is the impact of the welfare state on class inequality, gender equality or generational inequity? Are certain types of welfare states more likely to experience welfare or tax backlash? How have contemporary welfare states change (or not) in light of growing international migration, neoliberalism, globalization and the emergence of new social risks?
