課程簡介Course Description

This course introduces the life course perspective—the study of how people’s lives unfold over time within social, historical, and institutional contexts. We cover core concepts (trajectories, transitions, timing, duration, turning points, linked lives, cohort/period/age), theories of cumulative (dis)advantage, and the roles of family, education, work, health, and policy across life stages. Students will learn how life course scholars ask questions, measure change, and interpret evidence using longitudinal and mixed-methods data. Class activities emphasize reading empirical studies, hands-on exploration of simple longitudinal datasets, and communicating findings to academic and policy audiences. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to critically evaluate life course research and to design a basic, feasible study on a topic of their choice.

    課程目標與學習成效Course Objectives & Learning Outcomes

    1. Explain core life course concepts (trajectories, transitions, timing, duration, turning points, linked lives; age–period–cohort).
    2. Formulate a life course research question and translate it into testable hypotheses grounded in theory.
    3. Operationalize and summarize timing, ordering, and duration using basic longitudinal tools (e.g., life tables, transition matrices, simple sequence summaries).

    1. Class Participation 50%

This class pays attention to class participation. Each student is expected to voice his/her opinions and ideas in order to get a good grade from class participation. Simply sitting in the classroom without participation in the classroom discussion will not result in a good grade in this part.

    2 Short Quizzes 50%

There will be several in-class short quizzes (i.e., multiple choice). The purpose of these quizzes is to test students’ understanding of principles and concepts of the readings. If you miss a short quiz, you will not be able to take a make-up quiz.
