自由意志（free will）是有名（如果不是惡名昭彰）的哲學難題（如果不是神秘謎題），當代科學的發展（例如物理學、腦神經或認知科學等），更為此老問題增添了新面向與討論難度。然而，許多文化過去並沒有自由意志的概念或難題（至少沒有顯題化），或許這個概念或問題本身就是問題，會否這個概念或問題本身就不合理？如果這是普遍問題，為何有些文化過去並沒有出現或被認真思考？另一方面，接受西方現代文明的我們，似乎也很難不去探問或放下此問題？此外，基督宗教文化下的人們如果改宗或潛心東方文化或宗教（例如佛教），也很難不去思考此問題。不僅如此，就方法論而言，即便一個議題在某文化中沒有發生，也不代表我們不能挪用該文化的資源來思考此議題；同時這也可能讓我們更瞭解彼此文化。更何況，相關概念或用語（例如責任、選擇、決定、自主、控制、因果 ...等等）常見於日常生活之中。
本課程將從佛教的視角來反思自由意志議題，相關的討論包括（但不限於）：自由意志問題是否不存在於佛教？如果不存在（或至少沒有顯題化），其原因為何？引入佛教視角是否適當？佛教是否應該引入或處理自由意志問題？佛教主張無我，是否就應駁斥主體與自由意志？如此的話，如何說明世俗生活、倫理、修行？佛教主張緣起，並且否定宿命論或命定論（但又主張業與輪迴），到底是什麼樣的架構、這樣的架構是否有助於思考自由意志與決定論的困難？佛教特殊的二諦架構，是否能夠提供資源或特殊視角來解決自由意志難題？禪修與邁向解脫之修行，對此議題是否具有特別的意義或重要性？
本課程不預設佛哲基礎，歡迎有興趣的學友一同加入，以多重視角來重新思考此難題，或是認為這問題本身就有問題，或是解消此問題，或是正面地解決此問題，或是更好地理解並說明此問題之不可解 ...... ，想必會是有趣的旅程。
