本課程以介紹大學部學生史學研究的觀念、理論、方法和書寫策略上等相關課題為主，希望研習學生從歷史知識的「消費者」角色，逐漸成為「鑑賞者」和「生產者」的角色。課程的主軸是和學生一同探討思索，歷史知識的產生過程中，包含那些重要的方法、問題意識、主題、觀念架構、書寫技巧等因素的選擇組織和它們之間的配合及交互作用。
能力項目說明
通過本課程的訓練，有志於繼續深造的同學可以對正規學術研究的基本風貌有初步的了解，尤其是如何運用各種理論和方法於個人研究上；其他同學也可以從中反省檢討所學習的各類型歷史知識的特色和其可能的侷限性，進而對於史學知識的運用有更清楚的掌握。

主題單元的增減將視學生上課情況作彈性調整，各單元除講授基本概念外，相關講義和論文的研讀討論為上課的重點活動，同學必須預習指定讀物和參與課堂討論以及分組的口頭報告事宜；指定閱讀論文講義會在學期初全數上網，其他參考書籍同學可自行依課程進度閱讀。
