College English I/II is a two-semester course, designed to help students improve their English language proficiency, be prepared for learning in a higher education environment in English, and develop the ability to engage critically with the world. While it is a four-skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) integrated course, a particular emphasis will be placed on speaking and writing skills students tend to lack most. All College English I/II courses are conducted in English.

Class time will be devoted to activities that allow you to practice and interact in English. To successfully complete the course, you must learn the required vocabulary words, prepare for your presentation and group conversation, and review the materials for the midterm and final exams. Additionally, active participation in discussions and pair/group work during class is strongly encouraged. Your final grades are determined by the following course components:

    • Midterm exam (including a writing task): 20%
    • Final exam (including a writing task): 20%
    • Individual presentation: 15%
    • Written assignments: 15%
    • Group Conversation: 10%

    Participation

Your participation grade will be based on your attendance, class discussions, and the contributions you make to the learning experience of others. Contributions include your in-class questions to the instructor, insights and comments about class content, answers to the instructor's questions, and responses to other students' contributions.

    Examinations

All materials, including the readings, handouts, and videos provided in class, may be included on the midterm and final exams. Both the midterm and final exams are written tests containing a vocabulary section, a listening section, a reading section, and a writing task. No make-up exams will be given unless you have received the instructor's permission in advance.

    Written assignments

In addition to the in-class writing exercises, there will be two assignments of 250 words each, based on the course materials. Both the midterm and final exams will also include a writing task related to the writing skills introduced in class. More details will be provided in class.

    Student presentations

You will give a 5-minute PowerPoint presentation on your city or present a news article about your country from CNN, BBC, The Washington Post, or The New York Times. More details will be provided in class.

    Group Conversation

For the group conversation, you and your teammates will discuss one of the given topics. The conversation should last approximately 10 minutes, and you should aim to use as many words taught in class as possible. No scripts are allowed.
