This short-term program offers a unique blend of academic and industry exposure, centering on visits to the Department of Communications and New Media (CNM) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and renowned media and technology companies in Singapore. Through these engagements, students will gain an in-depth understanding of Singapore's advancements in digital communication and media technologies. The program facilitates discussions with industry representatives, exploring opportunities for industry-academia collaboration, student internships, and innovative applications of media technologies. By participating, students will broaden their perspectives on international communication practices and gain valuable hands-on experience.

Morning NUS Seminar: the media landscape in Singapore, including how Singapore tackles emerging issues in media and tech via various policies. Afternoon tour: Guided tour of the News Gallery at National Library Board. The News Gallery provides insights on key milestones on Singapore’s news media via the NLB’s newspaper archives dating from 1820s. |

Seminar on ‘Creative economy in Asia’ by Dr Jinna Tay Lunch Industry visit to Mediacorp / SPH / other media company |
Morning NUS Seminar: Despite Singapore’s small size, Singapore has a “vibrant and flourishing creative economy which includes sectors such as the arts and culture, media, and design” (MCCY, 2024). In this seminar, participants will learn about Singapore’s content creation industry, the evolution of media industries, as well as ongoing challenges in Singapore. This seminar is then complemented by an industry visit to a media company in the afternoon. Afternoon tour: Guided tour of the Mediacorp / SPH / other media company. |

Seminar on 'Cultural diplomacy and film in Asia' by Dr Soh Kai Ruo Lunch Film screening |
Morning NUS Seminar: Dr Soh will provide a seminar on the topic of cultural diplomacy – and discuss how festivals, art exhibitions, film and music play a role in shaping opinions on individuals, groups, issues and countries. Cultural diplomacy is generally viewed as the exchange of cultural ideas, and through such exchanges, individuals or organisations from different nations work together to cultivate a mutual understanding to build a positive image of their countries to the international public. Afternoon screening: After lunch, the group will be treated to a screening of a Singapore-made film followed by a post-film dialogue on the topic of cultural diplomacy and representation. |

Seminar on “Internet and political participation and consumerism in Singapore” by A/P Natalie Pang, Ast/P Ivy Fong Lunch and reflections Closing remarks Tour of campus & Tech Central at NUS Libraries |
Morning NUS Seminar: The day will begin with a seminar on social media and how it has shaped trends in political participation as well as political consumerism in Singapore / Asia. This work is based on more than a decade of research by A/P Natalie Pang, as well as Ast/P Ivy Fong’s ongoing research on political consumerism. Afternoon Seminar closure: After a short lunch, the group will be engaged in sharing their reflections as well as closing remarks from both departments. Afternoon tour: The afternoon will conclude with a guided tour of NUS campus as well as the award-winning tech central at NUS Libraries. During this tour, A/P Natalie Pang (who is also University Librarian) will provide insights on the collaborations and projects between the Communications and New Media Department and the library. |

Industry visit: Infinite Studios Singapore Film Society |
Morning Industry Visit: the day will begin with an industry visit to the Chinese Study Center at SUSS and the Singapore Film Society from 10:00am to 12:00pm. At SUSS, Professor Foo Tee Tuan, Associate Professor and Director of the Centre for Chinese Studies, will deliver a talk titled Singapore Chinese Cinema: From Xinke (新客) to Mee Pok Man (面薄佬). Professor Foo is also the Director of the Singapore Chinese Film Festival, a key platform for showcasing Chinese cinema in Singapore. Following this, Mr. Kenneth Tan, Chairman of the Singapore Film Society, will present on Optimizing Public-Private Sector Collaboration Outcomes for Film and Media from Singapore. Mr. Tan leads Singapore’s longest-established cultural cinema organization, which promotes film appreciation and media literacy. Afternoon tour: In the afternoon, the group will tour Infinite Studios from 2:00pm to 3:30pm, where they will explore Singapore’s vibrant media production facilities and gain insights into its innovative film and media landscape. |
