The objective of this course is to broaden the sphere of knowledge for students who are not majoring in world politics but interested in global governance and intergovernmental cooperation. Key international/regional organizations to be introduced are the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, European Union, G20, BRICS, ASEAN and APEC. We will not just study the origin and history of these organizations but also explore the emerging issues and operational challenges.
Students are required to read the weekly assignments before the class. We will conduct hand-on activities in class. Students’ full attention and proactive participation are crucial.
Most of the readings in the class are selected from the Education section of the Council on Foreign Relations: https://education.cfr.org/learn/reading/six-essential-international-organizations-you-need-know
