Students will study about the formation of traditional Chinese drama and oral performance from their origins in early Chinese history to their struggle for survival in the present day. These include Yuan zaju, Ming and Qing chuanqi, and Beijing opera. Students will also study modern Chinese drama and oral performance, which includes modern Chinese drama of the twentieth century and representative contemporary plays in Taiwan.
學生將學習到傳統中國戲劇表演的形成,自早期中國歷史時期直到今日的變化圖強。這些包括元雜劇,明清傳奇和京戲。學生也會學習現代中國戲劇表演藝術,包括二十世紀的中國戲劇及當代台灣代表戲劇。

This course focuses on the survey of traditional and modern Chinese drama and oral performance. The course will be conducted in English, and required readings are also in English. In addition to studying English, students are expected to express themselves in English in introducing Chinese culture and Chinese drama.
本課程專注在傳統與現代中國戲劇表演藝術。本課程將以英語授課,閱讀教材亦以英文為主。學生不但學習英語,還可以用英文表達介紹中國文化及中國戲劇。

Students are expected to preview the assigned text materials and MOOC videos on the Moodle platform before coming to the class. A quiz will be given to students before an assigned reading is taught in class. Students will be divided into small groups to do a 15-minute oral presentation related to weekly reading topics, to be followed by class discussion. Students are expected to go to a live performance and write a 1-page critique on it. A mid-term examination and final examination will be given in class according to the class schedule. All students are encouraged to participate in class discussion.
學生上課前應預習,並觀賞中國戲劇磨課師輔助教學影片(MOOC on the Moodle platform)。上新課前先小考。學生將分組做十五分鐘,與當周主題相關的口頭報告並帶領課堂討論。期中和期末有期中考和期末考。學生們應多參與課堂討論。
