The function of theory in the field of International Relations (IR) is to provide an angle which helps researchers to investigate and analyze events, issues, and even daily political life of human beings among different nations. This course focuses not only on the introduction of the mainstreams IR theories and the roles they play in the development of the discipline, but also on the practical facets of these theoretical approaches. Except introducing the mainstreams IR theories, this course also aiming at leading students to learn about the evolution of current International Studies, including the hot topics and theoretical turns happening since the new millennium.

The main goals of this course include:
Students are expected to be able to answer the questions regarding the special characteristics of diverse IR mainstreams theories, making comparison among the IR theories, and applying the theoretical approach to analyze issues assigned.

Emotions have been proved to be a crucial component in human decision making process. States did not always follow the traditional ways of action and reaction as suggested by the mainstreams IR theories. Emotions as rhetoric and behaviors are often seen in states or their policy makers’ performances when managing foreign affairs. Emotions could be trigger that shapes and shifts states’ foreign policy making direction in critical moment. This week the focal point of discussion will be the Emotional Turn in IR. |
