Pioneered by Longinus, codified by Nicholas Boileau and John Dennis, and popularised by Burke and Kant, the sublime, with its powerful emotions and overwhelming effects, provides rich loam for Romantic writers and artists to cultivate the (meta)physical sense of wonder or terror in their glorification of the natural or of the supernatural. This course aims to explore the impact of the sublime on the verbal and visual works of the Romantic era (particularly in England). We will begin by examining foundational writings on the sublime from Longinus to Kant to understand the traits of the sublime and its development. We will then look at how major Romantic painters and writers engage themselves with the sublime either directly or indirectly to make the aesthetic concept a major emblem of the Romantic movement.
