課程簡介Course Description

This course introduces basic concepts and issues that are essential for the description of the syntactic structure of languages, with particular emphasis put on syntactic structures in English. A scientific method for the study of language structure will be introduced. Topics to be covered include constituency and grammatical functions, categories, the structures of verb phrases and noun phrases, complex sentences, and various constructions. Students are expected to get familiar with syntactic concepts and structures, and exercise syntactic analyses and work on argumentation for developing a framework of grammar.

    Course requirements/Grading standards 課程要求/評分標準

    1. Attend class ON TIME. Three points are taken off your total score for one absence of the class. Furthermore, class participation through discussion and group work is essential. 
    2. Assignments and exercises are given. You are expected to write and present the syntactic analysis clearly.
    3. Writings will be graded based on descriptive adequacy, organization or ideas, writing clarity, style and format. Cheating or Plagiarism = Fail.
    4. There will be a mid-term exam and one final exam.
