This course introduces basic concepts and issues that are essential for the description of the syntactic structure of languages, with particular emphasis put on syntactic structures in English. A scientific method for the study of language structure will be introduced. Topics to be covered include constituency and grammatical functions, categories, the structures of verb phrases and noun phrases, complex sentences, and various constructions. Students are expected to get familiar with syntactic concepts and structures, and exercise syntactic analyses and work on argumentation for developing a framework of grammar.
