課程簡介Course Description

This course invites students to read news in English and express their ideas in a lucid manner. This course will not only enhance students’ communication skills, but it will also help them develop a comprehensive understanding of current events and social climate. For every week’s news reading, the instructor will choose one or two news articles ranging from health, lifestyle, crime, environment, education, science, and entertainment. Please regularly check your NCCU email, have the weekly news printed, and bring it to the class. Assigned news articles are mostly from BBC News, CNN, New York Times, Time Magazine, El País English, and Washington Post. News clips will also be provided.

    Course Requirements:

    1. Attendance and Punctuality. Please attend the class on time. Being late twice equals to one absence. Each unjustified absence will reduce 10 points from your final grade. After three absences in total, you will fail the course.
    2. Weekly News and Participation. There will be weekly news articles for you to read. Make sure you finish reading them before coming to the class. And please join the news discussion in class vigorously.
    3. Assignments. There will be worksheets that we shall do in the class. These activities (be they writing or speaking) will help you learn new words, drill sentence patterns, and engage in each news story.
    4. Students’ News Choice. Starting from week 3, students are encouraged to find a piece of news on their own and share their choice with everyone in class. This activity will help students to master the skills of paraphrasing and spotting the main idea in each news article.
    5. One Mock News Report. It will take place at the end of the semester. A team of two or three members should produce a mock news report as the final presentation. Each team should consist at least one as the news anchor and the others as the reporters. You are free to choose any pieces of news to present the mock news report. It should be approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
