Goals:

This course aims to offer introductions to Sociolinguistics, focusing on the intricate relationship between language and society, and the pivotal role language plays within various social contexts. The goal is to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of how language functions in diverse societal settings, and influences social dynamics. The core topics include but are not limited to societal multilingualism, world Englishes, language planning and policy, language variation, language death and preservation, language and gender/identity/age, intercultural communication, language change, etc.

    課程目標與學習成效Course Objectives & Learning Outcomes

    Objectives:

    This is a theme-based course. By the end of the semester, students are expected to achieve the following objectives & learning outcomes: 

    • Develop a critical understanding of key sociolinguistic concepts and theories.
    • Understand the impact of social factors on language use and variation.
    • Engage with contemporary issues in language policy and planning.
    • Apply sociolinguistic principles to real-world situations and case studies.

    Required Activities

    1. Discussion and Participation: To reinforce concepts covered in our readings, students are expected to preview the reading assignments and actively participate in classroom discussions. Please come prepared with comments and questions related to the reading assignments to engage in meaningful discussions.
    2. Reaction Papers (x3): Students are required to write three reaction papers reflecting on the issues or themes discussed in class. Each reflection should be supported by at least one publicly available resource and relevant examples. These papers should demonstrate critical thinking and the ability to connect class discussions to broader contexts.
    3. Reading/Theme Presentation (15 min.): Students must conduct a 10-minute presentation on either a reading assignment or a chosen theme that interests them most. Arguments must be supported by solid evidence, empirical studies, and cross-referenced discussions. Presentations should be conducted in English and accompanied by a PowerPoint (PPT) to enhance clarity and engagement. The presentation should include a summary of key points, critical analysis, and potential discussion questions for the class.

    Late work is not accepted. Unless you have a documented family or medical emergency, you are expected to meet deadlines as posted and/or as discussed in class.

    Your work will be evaluated according to the following criteria.

    • correctness of your information
    • substance of arguments and supporting evidence
    • clarity, conciseness, polish

    Attendance/Participation

    Regular attendance is expected in this course. Your final grade will be lowered if you have excessive absences over 4 times.

    Discussion and Participation: 10%

    Reading/theme Presentation: 30%

    Reaction paper (3x20%): 60%
