Goals:
This course aims to offer introductions to Sociolinguistics, focusing on the intricate relationship between language and society, and the pivotal role language plays within various social contexts. The goal is to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of how language functions in diverse societal settings, and influences social dynamics. The core topics include but are not limited to societal multilingualism, world Englishes, language planning and policy, language variation, language death and preservation, language and gender/identity/age, intercultural communication, language change, etc.

Late work is not accepted. Unless you have a documented family or medical emergency, you are expected to meet deadlines as posted and/or as discussed in class.
Your work will be evaluated according to the following criteria.
* Plagiarism, including copying AI-generated content without proper acknowledgment and handling of the source, is unacceptable.
Attendance/Participation
Regular attendance is expected in this course. Your final grade will be lowered if you have excessive absences over 4 times.
Grading Criteria
Discussion and Participation: 10%
Reading/theme Presentation: 30%
Reaction paper (3x20%): 60%
