海上保險的意義有二：
一、海上保險起源於人類文明起源兩河流域「漢摩拉比法典」（Hammurabi Code,1750BC）的海上冒險借貸，三千餘年的歷史中它的「損失補償原則」（The Principle of Indemnity）建構了我們世界保險的主流邏輯系統「保險人與被保險人的債的關係」(Obligations of the Insurer and the Insured)，迄至1854年英國法院於Dalby v. The India and London Life Assurance Co.一案判決中始開始確認有不適用損失補償原則的保險存在。
二、海上保險承保了國際商務主要的風險，它事實上支持著國際商務的順利運作。

能力項目說明
海上保險的承保與理賠會牽涉及國際商務之法律與實務，如Barratry會牽涉及租傭船契約(the law of charter-party)，防護與補償保險(Protection and Indemnity insurance)會牽涉及貨物運送的法律責任(the law of carriage of goods by sea)，船舶的運作會牽涉及船舶的拖帶、訴訟與仲裁，因此必需有進階的探討才能瞭解海上保險的全貌。
