這是政治大學民族學研究所碩士班的核心課程，結合人類學、民族學和歷史學的課程設計，課程目的欲培養學生對民族誌研究方法的思潮和理論背景有基礎認識，也能掌握民族誌田野工作的操作方式。
面對新冠疫情和全球化的衝擊，當代人類學民族誌研究和質性研究方法面臨何種困境和挑戰，當代人類家又發展出何種因應之道，這是當代民族誌研究需面對的重要議題。再者，近十年來智慧手機和數位媒體的快速發展和科技創新，特別是社群媒體的普及化和大眾化，以及個人化數位平台的新興傳播方式，改變了田野和田野工作的概念，以及什麼是田野筆記？什麼是民族誌研究？這樣的趨勢也促使研究者發展出更多元的民族誌研究方法。
本課程著重於民族誌研究的理論架構、民族誌書寫方式、以及不同形式或文類的民族誌書寫方式，並介紹民族誌的資料收集方法，包括：參與觀察、訪談設計、研究倫理和審查、知情同意書。學期中，學生並會進行民族誌參與觀察和訪談，以訓練他們能獨立進行後續個人論文田野研究的能力。
（本課程也將於學期中，舉辦三回的讀書會活動，閱讀當代民族誌研究的專書，欲讓學生瞭解當代民族誌寫作方式和不同風格）
