紀爾茲(Clifford Geertz, 1926-2006)是美國文化人類學以及印尼人類學研究的奠基者，在哈佛大學唸博士時，曾經受業於美國結構功能論的建立者帕森斯（Talcott Parsons）的門下。帕森斯認為文化與社會結構是影響行動者的重要驅動因素。然而，帕森斯的討論方式是採取抽象性的理論推導，而紀爾茲則透過人類學的經驗研究取向將其落實。他們相信，文化價值就像一種劇本，可以賦予行動者一種價值的圖像並導引其行動作為。這種奉文化價值前提來導引社會行動的預設，形塑出美國獨特的「文化的」社會學（cultural sociology）傳統。若細究這個「文化的」社會學理路根源，還是得說說來自帕森斯對德國社會學家韋伯（Max Weber）宗教社會學的涉獵與譯介。韋伯認為各種世界宗教的倫理提供了某種世界圖像，這些世界宗教因為時間日久而發展出更精緻與系統性的神義論，解釋了神的本質、世界的運作法則、人類的不足與罪咎，以及如何在俗世間透過一整套救贖方法，來超克現世的局限和人類自身軟弱，邁向解脫與得救的彼岸。在韋伯與帕森斯及其它詮釋思潮的理論導引之下，紀爾茲知名的博士論文研究在東爪哇的村落構築了三種宗教與階級群體的社會行動類型、文化價值觀及其共同織就的，剛剛獨立不久的新興民族國家的爪哇基層社會，並隨後在他一系列的比較研究中，發展出他著名的文化理論。

時下從中國大陸傳來的流行用語「內捲」，很多人不知道源自於紀爾茲的研究，除此外，在本課程中，我們將擇要閱讀紀爾茲的重要著作，因此這門課也帶著濃厚的印尼與東南亞區域研究的關懷，來回顧紀爾茲對印尼和穆斯林社會的文化詮釋，並討論Geertz理論的優缺點。
