Social psychology is the systematic study of the nature and causes of human behavior. This course is concerned with sociological social psychology, which emphasizes the social context and process through which our cognition, behaviors, and experiences are shaped. That is, this is a course about how we become who we are — how our selves are shaped by others, the groups we belong to, the contexts we are in, and our interactions as social beings. This course involves lectures, discussions, and other in-class activities, each of which is intended to contribute to your learning of social psychological concepts and your ability to apply what you have learned to your understanding of yourself and the social world.

In-class activities (20%): Every class session will have a graded component, such as reading quizzes, in-class writing, and small group activities. Your top 10 of these will count toward your grade. This allows you room for up to two unplanned (or planned) absences, as make-ups will not be offered.
Essay assignments (30%): There are two assignments for this course in the form of short essays. Each accounts for 15% of your final grade. Plan ahead so you know what is required in a particular week. More detailed instructions will be discussed in class ahead of time. In principle, you will have two weeks to complete each assignment. No late assignments will be accepted.
Exams (50%): There will be two exams for this course, a midterm and a final, each worth 25% of your final grade. Sociological concepts build on each other and relate to one another, so although the final is not cumulative in a traditional sense, it may require students to engage in a variety of concepts we have covered throughout the semester to demonstrate a holistic understanding of sociology.
