This course offers an introduction to the colonial historiography of Southeast Asia, with main focus on travel writing about the Malay Archipelago (± 1800-1945). It provides an overview of the way in which travellers – of different backgrounds and nationalities – represented the area in their travelogues. Attention will be on representation of landscape, different population groups and (unequal) power relations.
