課程簡介Course Description

This course aims to provide students with a solid understanding of the historical, cultural, economic, and political transformations that shape Southeast Asia. By offering the various topics of early histories, legacies of Europeans colonialism, nationalized ideologies, economic shifts and environment issues, students enable to explore the structures of socio-cultural transformations within this region under the impact of globalization.

這門課程旨在為學生提供對塑造東南亞的歷史、文化、經濟和政治轉變的深刻理解。 透過涵蓋早期歷史、殖民主義的遺址、國家意識形態、經濟變革和環境問題等多方面的主題,學生能夠探索在全球化的影響下,該地區社會文化轉變的結構。

    課程目標與學習成效Course Objectives & Learning Outcomes

    Students will benefit through the insightful knowledge and the sharing of best practices. By the end of the course, students will be able to obtain the following knowledge:

    • Exploring the regional uniqueness and cultural diversity to understand the social transformations in SEA.
    • Understanding the historical contexts of Southeast Asia which include the early histories and the legacies of colonialism and nationalist movements that influence to this region’s political and societal shifts.
    • Analyze the current circumstances of Southeast Asian economies and its role in the global economic context.
    • Identifying the contemporary issues such as environment, labor, demographic shifts… which contribute to transformations in how communities organize and function.

    評量工具與策略、評分標準成效Evaluation Criteria

    Students are responsible for reading materials before class in order to reserve valuable in-class time for practice sharing. All assignments are sent to instructor's email prior to the deadlines. The final grades are determined by 3 parts as following:

    • Attendance: 30%
    • In-class discussion and feedbacks: 20%
    • Oral report: 30% (Note: One group is required to present one case report in term of aspects of social transformations in Southeast Asia
    • Written report: 20%
