This course introduces the issues of diversity and multiculturalism in Korea and explores the ways in which those issues have shaped current Korean society and culture.
能力項目說明
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) categorizes a country as multicultural and multiracial when the proportion of mixed-race persons, marriage migrants, migrant workers, foreign residents, and second-generation immigrants exceeds 5% of the population. According to it, South Korea is expected to be a multicultural and multiracial country by 2024. To understand changing images of South Korea from a monoracial country to a multicultural/racial/ethnic country, we will learn the cultural history of Korean multiculturalism by examining literary works, music, films, advertisements, and television dramas. We will read the articles about diversity and multiculturalism to explore the themes of mixed race, adoption, diaspora, marriage migration, migrant labor, refugees, defectors, and reverse migrations.
