Guideline on Reading & Translation
Students will have to form a group of three. From the third week onward, each group will be assigned a paragraph, which group members will read and translate in class. The performance of the group will be evaluated based on the correct pronunciation and vocalisation, while questions related to the meanings of the passages will be posed to the group members. Each group, thus, should preview and study the assigned paragraph before coming to class.
Guideline on Discussion
Each group (of three) will lead one discussion session related to the subject taught in the given week, e.g. Ibn Sīnā.
The session should be 15-minute long and less than 20 minutes. The discussion can be conducted in your preferred language or form, but the evaluation will be based on the engagement of the audience in Arabic.
Guideline on Content Creation
Students can choose one of the following: 1) recording a podcast programme; 2) creating a video; 3) translating a text.
The theme of the podcast or video must be related to one of the texts taught in this course. The form and structure of the podcast or video are not limited. Inter-disciplinary innovation and creativity are highly encouraged.
In the podcast or video, the host must identify which text is discussed in the programme and use Arabic for more than 5 minutes, whereas the rest of the programme can be conducted in their preferred language.
The length of the podcast or video must be between 10 to 15 minutes.
For the translation, students have to pick a story of at least 3 pages in length that is not taught in class, from the following works:
al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī. Tārīkh Madīnat Al-Salām.
al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī. Al-Riḥla fī ṭalab al-ʿilm.
Ibn Abī ʿUṣaybiʿa. ʿUyūn Al-Anbāʾ Fī Ṭabaqāt al-Aṭṭibāʾ.
The text they translate must be identified with full reference in the beginning.
The submission deadline is 12pm, June 20, 2024. The translation, video, or podcast should be submitted on Moodle.
WARNING!!
When you turn in your assignment, name the file with your Chinese name only! The course instructor may refuse to mark the assignment that fails to adhere to this simple rule.
