課程簡介Course Description

The objective of this course is to provide the students with the essential and fundamental concepts of problem solving in statistics. The topics include “Define Problem”, “Data Collection”, “Statistical Analysis”, and “Decision & Interpretation.” At the end of this course, the students should be able to define the real problem. There are six homework assignments designed to meet our requirements: 

  1. Problem Definition: Standard Operating Procedure of Problem Definition , Pitfalls and Examples of Problem Definition (Weeks 1~3)
  2. Data Collection: Sampling Design, Quetionaire Design,  (Weeks 4~5)
  3. Exploratory Data Analysis: Data Cleaning, Data Visualization, Data-driven Skills (Weeks 6~8)
  4. Statistical Analysis for questionnaires: Chi-square Test, Tests of Sample Representativeness (Weeks 9~10)
  5. Mid-term Project: Empirical Studies (Weeks 11~12)
  6. Advanced Statistical Analysis: Generalized Linear Model, Multivariate Analysis (Weeks 13~14) 
  7. Presentation and Interpretation: Writing and Presentation Skills (Weeks 15~16)
  8. Case Study: Empirical Analysis of Big Data (Weeks 17~18)

Homework is due on Tuesday afternoon at 2 and no late homework will be accepted. In addition to the regular bi-weekly homework, there will be in-class assignments and discussion. Therefore, the class participation is also counted in the final grade. The students will be grouped into 2 or 3 persons. The homework and in-class discussions are team-based.

    This course covers a broad range of topics and no single textbooks can cover all the materials in this class. Instead, the instructor will prepare power point files for each class and suggested references will be given to the students in class.     There are regularly based homework, in-class discussion, and one final report. The homework counts 45%, the in-class discussion 20%, and the final report 35%.
