While China was a closed and underdeveloped socialist country more than thirty years ago, China now has played an increasingly important role in the current international economic system. China’s impressive growth since the 1990s has had a profound impact on the Asia-Pacific and the global community. China’s expanding political influence, diplomatic voice, military strength, and economic engagement have impacted traditional geopolitical and economic issues, while also impacting global society, culture, and ideology. Given the possible continuation of China’s rise and the significance of its influence and size, concerns have arisen such as the trends and effects of China’s growth and the aspects and degrees of China’s economic integration into the international economic system. Throughout the process, we are also interested in exploring the issues on whether China has challenged or accepted the established rules of the international economic system, and whither the global economy and governance would head for in the context of China’s rise. This course will first introduce the theories and perspectives of international political economy, review the foundations and evolutions of international economic systems, and then examine the varying interaction between China and transnational economic factors on different issues areas in the international economic system.
