本課程設計主要是針對有志於研究美國政治相關議題，或對「美國政治研究取向」的政治學（American Style of political science）有興趣的研究生，提供一個宏觀、全面的「導覽性」課程。因此，本課程將不聚焦於美國政府與政治的「現實」（facts），而是從學術的角度探討「美國政治研究」所發展出來的各項與政治制度及行為相關的理論。課程中所需閱讀的文獻也是以重要理論為出發點，希冀學生在修習完本課程後，對於美政各次領域中的學術辯論有初步的瞭解。對於有志於從事比較政治或國際關係研究的學生，也可以藉由修習本課程，瞭解美政的研究取向，並進一步應用在相關政治學課題的研究上。

本課程的上課方式包括老師講授教學與課堂討論。各週上課進度及主要指定閱讀文獻已列於課程大綱中，請同學自行購買相關書籍或至圖書館查閱、下載相關論文，並分週依照進度於課前閱讀完畢。若有臨時或補充教材，將於課堂另行印發。本課程要求修課同學每週都要參與課堂討論，每位同學當週皆需繳交1000字的文獻回應（由老師出題的短文寫作或是導讀教材之文獻評析），評論導讀的文獻。期中考為24小時的Take home exam，考試內容類似博士班學科考方式，著重文獻探討，但不會超出授課範圍。期末考週則由各位同學提出約10頁（10,000字）研究論文大綱（Research Proposal），主題雖不侷限於美國政治，但必須與美政所發展的理論相關。
