法國社會學家P. Bourdieu主張，讓當代社會學與古典社會學區分開來的重要特色在於反身性（reflexivity）。亦即，相較於古典社會學急於瞭解其當下的現代社會與過去的傳統社會之差異，當代社會學則注意到，古典社會學對其當下社會的反省，往往也指向了支撐起古典社會學自身的基礎，例如科學、理性等等。換言之，如果批判資本主義政治經濟體制的可能性，也是建立在讓資本主義得以運行的機能，那麼這樣的批判與所指出的出路是徹底的而可能實現的嗎？還是僅僅是資本主義政治經濟體制的自我療癒。
同理，社會學家也是社會成員之一，其對社會人的描繪也適用於社會學家自身。當社會學家分析關係網絡、權力、利益、或階級與成長過程對個人的影響時，也該注意到這些因素亦可能影響社會學家的研究而造成研究上的盲點。進而，當社會學家認為一般人日常生活中的認知判斷是以理所當然為其不可或缺的基礎，那麼學者在其日常的學術研究中亦是如此。這樣的自覺當然也拉下了學者、尤其是社會學家高高在上，且自以為是的客觀超然地位。
美國社會學家H. Garfinkel早在Bourdieu之前就已經提出反身性的概念。並據此別開生面地結合了社會現象學的理論觀點與他自己所開創的經驗研究。其研究涵蓋了一般人的日常生活與學者的學術研究。甚至也影響了Woolgar與Latour合著的《實驗室生活》，其重要性與開創性可見一斑。但其著作也堪稱社會學的天書之一。不只其論述思想因反身性而變得纏繞複雜，其行文構句亦隨之冗長難解。因此，我們將這學期的課程帶領修課同學直接進入其原典，藉以培養學生自主閱讀與思辨的能力。

這門課將以所謂的「全景敞視」教學法來進行。上課時教師將隨機指定修課同學翻譯與解釋原典的語句。而本課程的評分標準只有一個，那就是上課表現。既無期中、期末考試，也不要求撰寫報告。因此，過去本人類似課程的修課同學向來得組織讀書會，以便課前充分預習，方能達成授課教師的要求標準。
