本課程的重點在於探討歷史記憶和國族認同想像之間的密切複雜關係。希望藉由共同研讀相關的理論，如B. Anderson, T. Baycroft, M. Halbwachs, P. Burke等學者的著作，建立同學對於研究此課題的方法和問題意識的基本概念。另一方面，近代中國的國族論述想像的歷史過程將是討論分析的另一個重點。透過研討關於此課題的中英文著作，希望同學能對此一歷史現象有基本的認識，以便日後能進行更深入的研究，同時也希望藉由此一課題的探討，能培養同學有比較分析的研究視角，能夠從事對於其他地區和族群的共同體想像的研究課題。
能力項目說明
課程的第一部分為相關理論分析討論，有關近代國族主義的部分，將以Anderson, Baycroft著作為主，其次將閱讀Halbwachs，Burke關於集體記憶的著作。最後將以Peter Novick 對於猶太大屠殺公共記憶的檢討等文章，作為歷史研究的示範性作品加以檢討分析。第二部分將以近代中國自晚清以降的國族想像工程的歷史發展。包含黃帝神話，民族英雄，黃禍，病夫，睡獅，國恥記憶等相關議題的研究論著將是討論的焦點。
