宗教除了超越性的向度，也具現世性和臨在性，因此種種關於宗教的認識和詮釋均無法脫離所處脈絡。宗教在東南亞社會扮演重要角色，其政教關係、宗教間的關係以及所謂的「宗教自由」往往不是相對世俗化、自由宗教市場的台灣社會的脈絡所能理解。另一方面，社會系統其實受一個獨立的文化系統塑造和控制，文化體系是價值觀、符號、信仰的複雜交織體，宗教正是價值觀、符號、信仰的集合，因而與文化交織。基督宗教咸被認為來自西方，但已深植本土，且是東南亞某些國家為人所知的元素之一。
早在伊斯蘭傳入東南亞地區以先，基督宗教的亞述東方教會在七世紀就已進入馬來半島和蘇門答臘北部，然而十三到十五世紀，伊斯蘭開始在馬來世界（Nusantara）發展，基督宗教早期據點逐漸消失。歐洲大航海時代揭開序幕以後，天主教隨著葡萄牙殖民勢力進入，與伊斯蘭在這塊區域展開傳教競爭。在1557年佔領澳門後，葡萄牙以此為中心向交趾支那（越南）、高棉、暹羅傳教。而後新教海權國家荷蘭、英國等也挾其殖民勢力在東南亞傳教。對東南亞許多國家而言，基督宗教與殖民勢力可謂緊密相關，但也代表某種現代性；而在一些海洋東南亞國家，伊斯蘭被視為反殖民的力量，與基督宗教迥然有別，因此產生某種對立。在二戰後紛紛獨立的東南亞國家的社會和文化處境下，與殖民勢力相關的基督宗教扮演什麼樣的角色？還有今日強調非西方的「世界基督教」（World Christianity）研究視野下，在不同的東南亞國家，基督宗教又產生何種多元性和在地性？一般論及東南亞與宗教時少有涉及基督宗教，然而基督宗教在許多東南亞國家往往是第二或第三大宗教（在菲律賓和東帝汶更是人數最多的宗教），且具影響力，在某些地方更是身份認同的象徵。
作為宗教研究所和東南亞文化與宗教跨領域學程一部分，本課程將先概述東南亞歷史文化，並讓同學對基督宗教有基本認識，之後分別探討幾個東南亞國家的基督宗教概況以及與社會和文化有關的議題、案例。此外，本課程也預計籌劃校外參訪，認識在本地的東南亞基督宗教群體。
能力項目說明
國人一般提及東南亞的宗教，如數家珍的不外乎上座部佛教、伊斯蘭、印度教。除提及菲律賓，基督宗教往往被忽視。本課程具東南亞文化和世界宗教通識的意義，嘗試以基督宗教為切入點認識東南亞的社會與文化，同時也期盼提升修讀者對基督宗教及其現況的基礎認識，尤其是它在世界各地的多元性與異質性，單以西方基督宗教為模版已不足夠。另外，基於特殊時空脈絡所致東南亞各國各族文化在台灣的落戶與交融，台灣社會將來可望具備較諸其他東亞國家更傑出的東南亞文化識讀潛力。作為現代公民，相信培養多元文化視野以及對世界宗教的認識將是不可或缺的一環，本課程盼望能承擔部分責任。
