The concept of the “Anthropocene,” defined as the era when humans became the primary geological agents, has been one of the most generative concepts to emerge within the humanities and social sciences. Studies of the Anthropocene have brought to attention the power and fragility of human agency in the face of significant climate change. Furthermore, as Dipesh Chakrabarty has noted, it has challenged the conventional boundaries of scholarly disciplines. Despite the increase in studies on the Anthropocene, there has been relatively little exploration of how religious history intersects with the emergence of Anthropocene studies. In this course, we ask: how can studies of the Anthropocene provide insight into existing studies of religious belief and practice? Likewise, how can transformations in religious thought and practice inform our understanding of the collective climate crises we face?
