近二十多年來有許多歷史研究的著作以「知識」與「資訊」為研究對象。像是人們如何取得各式各樣的資訊、在技術進步下如何處理它們?各種知識怎麼建構、分類,如何在社會中傳播?資訊與知識如何影響人類社會的各個層面、在歷史的進程中扮演什麼角色?本課程將閱讀討論這些主題的著作,主要挑選從近代早期到十九世紀歐洲史與中國史的專書與期刊論文,以時代與技術作為主軸,分成十三個單元逐次研讀。這些研究在不同場合可能被分類為書籍史、思想史、科學史、新聞史、社會文化史與政治史,然而都以知識或資訊為研究對象。這此跨領域與跨地域的比較幫助我們更全面地掌握相關課題。
本課程每週由同學輪流報告指定閱讀,同學須積極參與討論。在上課討論之外,本課程有三項作業:1.資訊史條目心得;2.書評(單本書);3.書評論文(同主題多本書)。在這三項作業中,期望同學循序漸進,對自己有興趣的主題有更深入的認識。
