課程簡介Course Description

This course will help students improve their English-language reading, writing, and oral presentation skills in preparation for producing academic work in English and participating in English-language academic events. Students will analyze English-language scholarship, films, and primary-source materials pertaining to their own research interests. During the second half of the semester, students will work toward preparing a short English-language research paper and 15-minute conference-style oral presentation.

    • Write a 1-page double-spaced reflection paper on one of the two articles

     

    Week 6 (3/28): Historiographical Review II

    • Find and read two more English-language academic articles related to your field of research
    • Write a 1-page double-spaced reflection paper on one of the two articles

    Week 8 (4/11) Midterm Oral Presentations

     

    Week 9 (4/18): Midterm Oral Presentations

     

    Week 10 (4/25): Historical Film Review

    • Watch and discuss English-language historical film voted on by the class

     

    Week 11 (5/2): Historical Film Review

    • Watch an English-language film of your own choosing and prepare to summarize and analyze the film in class

     

     

    Week 12 (5/9): Art of the Abstract

    • Collect and read 4 abstracts of academic articles related to your research interests
    • In-class writing exercise to draft abstracts for final presentations

     

    Week 13 (5/16): Primary Source Analysis

    • Select two primary sources that you will use in your final presentation (if the sources are not in English, please translate the most important passage into English)
    • Write 1-page analysis of primary sources

     

     

    Week 14 (5/23): Final Oral Presentations

     

    Week 15 (5/30): Final Oral Presentations
