探究哲學問題就像是走在一座令人迷惘、困惑不已的思想迷宮裏一樣。這個思想迷宮並不在雲端裏，而是在我們的日常生活中。我究竟是否存在？周遭一切會不會如夢如幻、只不過是惡魔的玩笑？什麼都可以懷疑嗎？還是有什麼是確定不可以懷疑的？人和機器有什麼不同？我的命運是否早已決定？還是有選擇的自由？而自由的界限又在哪？科學就是真理嗎？如果不是，那麼什麼才是真理？作為哲學的入門課，本課程將從上述問題出發，以便激發同學對哲學的興趣，並幫助同學瞭解哲學的主題與論證內容。
然而，即使是科學也沒有辦法幫助我們走出哲學的思想迷宮。要走出這個思想迷宮，我們不能粗率、武斷地為之，而是必須先探討其令人感到困惑的原因所在，並進一步指出我們日常觀念中的種種模糊與混亂，然後才批判地做出解答。為此，本課程將對一些主要的哲學概念予以分析，並在盡量避免艱深術語的條件下，適時徵引西方哲學經典。此外，為提高同學學習成效與學習興趣，本課程將採專題討論方式，期能一方面激發同學主動思考的習慣，一方面藉由經過時代淬瀝的西方哲學名家的著作，引領我們在哲學的思想迷宮中找到智慧之路。
本課程為一哲學導論課，特重介紹西方價值和道德理念之發展，以及與此相關之哲學問題。欲達成之教學目的有二：一、提供哲學基礎訓練，特別強調對問題、論證、概念的分析和理解，以及開放心靈的培養。二、邀請修課同學反省生命價值相關問題。
在本課程中，我們將培養同學哲學思維與思辨能力，並幫助同學理解世界、探索人生。我們會用活潑卻又嚴謹的方法，透過許多有趣的「思想實驗」來思考幾個對於人生來說基本而重要的哲學議題，包括：我是誰？自由是什麼？我們是自由的嗎？道德是什麼？人生的意義是什麼？我應該追求幸福嗎？幸福是什麼？這世界上有真理嗎？世界就如同我所看到的一樣嗎？如何嚴謹地思考？我們的理性有沒有界限？等等非常有趣又根本的問題。
哲學思考的一個重要特色就是沒有「標準答案」。我們將運用活潑的想像力、敏銳的觀察力、以及嚴謹的思辨與推論，來發掘、並支持我們心中最好的答案。有時我們無法確定這些最好的答案就是正確的答案。但是身為人特別而又可貴的地方之一，就在於能夠對自己不了解的事物提出問題，並勉力去追求不見得能夠得到的答案。這份追求本身就是成長，也是價值所在。
能力項目說明
本課程之目的在於幫助同學瞭解哲學之主題與論證內容。為此，本課程將系統的討論大學階段基礎哲學課程通常會講授之主題，並盡量避免艱深之術語。此外，為提高同學學習成效與學習興趣，本課程將採專題討論方式，並適時參考相關電影，期能引領學生進入當代哲學殿堂，並激發學生主動思考之習慣。
本課程擬透過期中期末個人報告，評量同學是否確實具有批判反思之哲學基本能力。為此，期中報告及期末報告題目皆精心設計，以確保同學皆透過個人思辯而得到答案，並知道這些答案皆有所不足，必須進一步探討。
本課程目標可列舉如下：
一、理解哲學各領域的主要課題
二、了解哲學思考和哲學方法（尤其語言分析、邏輯分析及後設思考）的特性，及熟悉常用哲學語詞概念
三、理解西方價值和道德理念之發展
四、掌握撰寫哲學論文的技巧，並於學期中與末各完成哲學報告乙篇
五、培養自主學習的態度和能力
六、學習我們研讀作品所介紹的觀念與思考方法，與所探討論證中重要論點
七、在課堂學習與討論活動中培養哲學思考能力與對生命意義與價值的反思
