課程簡介Course Description

The goal of this course is to examine the various fundamental issues of Asian regional development so that students will gain enough knowledge to understand the development characteristics as well as economic dynamics of the region.

    The course will focus on the study of growth triangles in Asia, trade and investment patterns, the process of integration, the role of China in Asian regional development, financial system and monetary integration, future development, and the consequences for the global economy.

     

    Course Contents:

    I. Asian Economic Integration

    • An overview
    • Comparative advantage and division of labor in Asia
    • Growth Triangles: market-driven integration
    • Economic dynamics in Asia: Flying geese pattern of development
    • FDI and trade in Asia (intra-industry, inter-industry, and intra-regional trade)
    • The effect of globalization and the ICT revolution
    • The regional production networks: the IT industry

     

    II. Institutional Arrangement of Economic Cooperation in Asia

    • Globalization and regionalism (closed vs. open regionalism)
    • ASEAN FTA
    • China and ASEAN: competition or cooperation?

    評量工具與策略、評分標準成效Evaluation Criteria

    This course adopts a self-directed learning approach and has no prerequisite for registration. There will be in-class current issue presentations and discussion by subject, a mid-term project proposal (research questions and literature review), and a final term paper. The semester grade consists of the in-class presentation (40%), the mid-term proposal presentation (20%), and a final term paper (40%). I will give a bonus to students for creative class discussion and expect to have regular class attendance. Absence without notice will affect your final grade.

    The deadline for the term paper is the 18th of January, 2024, one week after the date of NCCU’s final exam. All term papers should be submitted by e-mail to ycchuang@nccu.edu.tw with the student number as the file name. Submission of term paper after the deadline will be subject to heavy penalty towards the grade.
