政教關係可謂認識東南亞國情以及在地文化的一扇窗戶。在政教分立、自由宗教市場的台灣脈絡，或許很難理解、同理東南亞國家政教關係的複雜多元以及宗教在東南亞社會的重要性，這塊區域裡各國所謂的「宗教自由」也未必如國人所認知的那般。大致而言，政教關係光譜的兩個極點分別是神權政治或與此相似的共產主義社會的全能政治以及激進世俗主義的政教分離（Laïcité），東南亞各國宗教與國家、社會的關係多元複雜，俱各座落在此道光譜上不同位置。再者，宗教並非僅是一些去地方脈絡、真空狀態下的教義命題，也非純粹形而上的，反之與各國脈絡息息相關，宗教和政府或國家的關係往往直接影響宗教的實踐，與在地人民生活關係密切。作為宗教研究所和東南亞文化與宗教跨領域學程一部分，本課程前半段將先介紹東南亞的政治、宗教背景，並擬藉海洋東南亞為主的各國政教相關議題和個案的討論，建立對該區域社會、人文、宗教的認識，無論對從事當地宗教研究、社會研究甚或前往經商、工作均有助益。作為現代公民，相信培養多元文化視野以及對世界宗教的認識將是不可或缺的一環，本課程盼望能承擔部分責任。
