Advanced Indonesian Grammar and Writing is an intensive course, partly linked to the Intermediate Indonesian Conversation course. The students will practice their grammar knowledge and writing skills in class, individually as well as in pairs and in small groups. They will get acquainted with a wide range of topics as to deepen their understanding of specific Indonesian themes and settings. Through short introductory lectures on specific grammar items and sociocultural aspects of the language the students will develop the practical ability to apply knowledge of grammar and vocabulary in written discourse (on advanced level).

The aim of the course is to strengthen grammar knowledge and writing abilities of the students. Learning outcomes by the end of the course are the following: · Students will be able to distinguish between informal and formal writing; · Students will be able to write official (application) letters for work related matters; · Students will be able to express their opinion – about a wide range of topics – in formal, written discourse and short essays; · Students are familiar with basic socio-cultural knowledge about student life in Indonesia; Indonesia’s entertainment industry; news reporting; natural hazards/environmental issues and popular culture in Indonesia. · Students are familiar with grammar items and vocabulary on advanced level; · Students are familiar with the (creative) process of writing as individuals; · Students are familiar with the challenges and dynamics of group writing.

Assessment of the course consists of the following elements: · Attendance and participation: 15 % of the overall mark · Weekly assignments: 15 % · Mid-term written examination (individual): 30% · Final exam (written examination): 40% Attendance of the course and active participation in class is mandatory. Students are encouraged to attend well prepared in order to have a fruitful lesson. Weekly homework is a quintessential element of the learning process. Absence (for good reasons) has to be notified before class. Missed classes will have to be made up with an extra assignment.
