This course introduces the ways in which contemporary issues of globalization have shaped Korean popular culture and media, from Korean cinema to K-pop.
Through an examination of Korean popular culture and media, the course explores the connection between popular cultural forms and the historical-political moment in which they are created and distributed. How have international relations, political events, and foreign policy influenced Korean popular culture and media? Through examining this question, we will develop tools to analyze media representations and understand key issues in historical and contemporary experiences of Koreans and Korean diaspora. Within the contexts of postwar Korea, the Korean War, dictatorship, migration, and reverse migration, we will explore the themes of gender, race, nationality, and identity.
