This course is a continuation of Polish Conversation 1. All of you are welcome! To fully benefit from participation, students need to have a background in Polish grammar and possess basic vocabulary. If you have not taken Polish 1 previously, you might be assigned extra review exercises to complete at home, so that you can catch up. We will explore a number of topics, ranging from family life to our everyday routine, along with basic grammar. You will gain more understanding of Polish culture and values that come along with it.
Please keep in mind that the teaching materials align with the Common European Framework of Reference. This means that the topics we discuss in class and the new items we learn together may be encountered later on by those of you who take any certification exam in the future

Course Description:
Prerequisites: It is fine if you have not taken the Polish Conversation (1) course, as long as you know basic grammar and vocabulary.
Overview: The purpose of this course is to give students a chance to learn basic dialogs in Polish, so that they can run a simple but efficient conversations on selected topics in everyday life, varying from our daily schedules and activities to family life. They will learn high-frequency phrases and words often used in everyday conversations. In order to enable the learners to freely substitute words, basic grammar rules will be presented, along with the ways of creating correct forms (cases, conjugation). We will talk about culture and its key representing figures. A number of proverbs will be given to promote your understanding of spoken discourse. The teacher will suggests tracks for further exploration. When applicable, comparisons between Polish and Russian may be drawn, so that you can relate the new content to the background knowledge you already have. This course is worth taking if you want to have a clearer and detailed picture of Polish language and culture it represents. Feel welcome! Zapraszamy!
Student learning objectives: After taking this course, you should be able to (1) run simple dialogs on given topics, (2) know the vocabulary and grammar rules introduced in class and apply them in varying contexts, and (3) demonstrate a higher cross-cultural awareness. Please kindly not that whatever is introduced in class, both in form of handouts or written on the blackboard, is required later on. In other words, you need to schedule certain amount of time each week and carefully review the material. You know yourself and your schedule better than I do, so plan everything accordingly.
Methods of instruction and materials: On a regular basis, we will use handouts. I will offer additional comments and write the most important things on the blackboard. You will get some dialogs to memorize and later present as role plays. We will look at grammar, which will be explained as clearly as possible, so that you can enjoy exercises later on and know exactly how to apply the rules in practice. Most of the work will be done by you individually, so that there is no need to adjust your schedule to someone else’s plans. (You may, however, expect simple pair activities as well, but only in class, not as homework.) As you can see in the weekly schedule below, you will be assigned a simple task of preparing a poster and presenting it in class. You don’t need to draw like Matejko to handle it. Last but not least, we will play games, so don’t hesitate and come!

Requirements:
Exams and quizzes: Unsurprisingly, there will be two big exams: in the middle (week 9) and in the end of the semester (week 17). Each time, we will divide it into two parts: writing and speaking. These will be based on the material introduced in class, ranging from the phrases and words to grammar, proverbs, sentences, etc. You will need to prove your speaking ability, along with your improved knowledge of vocabulary and grammar forms. (Note: For the writing part, correct spelling is the key.)
If for some important reasons you cannot join us on that particular day, please inform me in advance and present a printed documentation proving your point. If some emergency happens, first, inform the department authorities and give me a documented reason for not being able to come. Students who miss the exam with no proven reason will not be allowed to write it on another day.
Make sure to come to class ON TIME, not more than 15 minutes late, so that you can be allowed to take the test. No cellphones are allowed till you leave the room. Using a phone (or any other behavior inappropriate in this case) would result in getting 0 with no chance to make it up.
Homework policy: Please give me your homework on time. If you’re absent, kindly bring it as soon as you get back to class.
Quizzes: If there is a test in class, you will know in advance. Skipping it or being late for more than 15 mins results in a 0. If you write it on any other day later on, you can get max. 60 points.
BEING ABSENT IS NOT A REASON TO COME TO CLASS UNPREPARED NEXT WEEK. Please ask your classmates what we have covered and what to do. If there is a test, be ready. Be proactive and responsible for your own learning process.
Grading policy:
Exams: 30% + 30%
Attendance and in-class performance, including homework and quizzes: 40%
Please note: If you want to pass the course, make sure to come to class. Do not skip more than 3 weeks (equal to 9 hours of instruction). Students who skip 5 weeks or more (with no documented reason given to the teacher in class before the end of the semester) do not get a passing grade. Do not come late, as it also influences your performance grade.
If you decide to withdraw from the course, show up in person and before the deadline approved by the school. Documents handed in by other persons or after the deadline will not get signed.
In class, please kindly refrain from using electronic devices, unless we need to check a word. Never use a cellphone during tests or exams, as this would result in a failing grade with no chance to make up.
