This course is designed to introduce the syntax and fundamental grammatical structures of Modern Standard Arabic at the upper intermediate level. The course aims to focus on the development of comprehension and production skills. Students will engage with a variety of authentic reading texts, discussions, and group activities. This course will also enhance students’ knowledge of everyday vocabulary and expressions.

By the completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. comprehend the main idea of authentic Arabic texts on a variety of topics
2. understand and use all basic sentence structures in Arabic
3. use knowledge of grammar, roots, and morphological forms to guess the meanings of new
words in context
4. write compositions with connected paragraphs about a variety of topics in detail

(1) Attendance and Participation (10%): Students should plan to attend and participate in all sessions and engage actively in group discussions and activities. Students should also use as much Arabic throughout the course as possible. Students will be allowed only three absences throughout the semester. (2) Homework (20%): Late assignments will receive partial credit (70%) and only be accepted up to one week from the deadline. Please let your instructor know if you have special circumstances that interfere with your ability to complete assignments in a timely manner. (3) Quizzes (20%): There will be a total of two quizzes throughout the semester. If a student must miss a quiz, they should contact the instructor in advance. (4) Midterm (25%): The midterm examination will be given in class on Monday, 11/6. Please contact your instructor if you are ill or need to quarantine during a scheduled exam. This may include rescheduling an individual student’s exam or arranging for an alternative testing option. (5) Final Exam (25%): The final exam will be given in class on Monday, 1/8. It will be comprehensive and will test the following: vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and writing. Please contact your instructor if you are ill or need to quarantine during a scheduled exam. This may include rescheduling an individual student’s exam or arranging for an alternative testing option. |
