Course Description

The scope of this course is to reflect a wide range of topics considered as domains within linguistic inquiry and issues involving natural language processing. Topics to be discussed in this class cover in detail the fundamental aspects of linguistics, including the nature of human language, syntax, semantics, phonetics, phonology, discourse, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, language acquisition and language learning. The course provides a general introduction to the scientific study of languages, involving Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Spanish, Turkish, Slavic languages, and Southeast Asian languages (i.e., Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian).

Students will explore different aspects of human language and how language operates through linguistic observation, analyses of language data, discussion of linguistic problems, group projects, and other class activities. With a better understanding of the nature of language, students are expected to become more objective in dealing with human communications.
