This is a core course for Ph.D. students in the subfield of Comparative Politics in the Political Science Department. In this course, we explore the important literature and theoretical debates that have been central to research in contemporary comparative politics.

This seminar is reading and discussion intensive. We critically examine the important literature and theoretical debates in comparative politics. All students are expected to have covered the required readings for each session. The recommended readings listed complement the required readings and the expectation is that, together, the required and recommended readings will provide a foundation for students preparing for field examinations. (A complete reading list will be provided in the first day of class).

All students are required to write two essay responses to a question that is given to students one week in advance of the due date. The essays are to be no more than 10 pages of double-spaced text. No outside sources or references are required. The instructor is interested in your own ideas, thoughts and reactions. No late papers will be accepted without a physician’s note. Papers will be worth 50% of the final grade (25% each).
