本課程全覽社會研究中所使用之基本概念與過程，內容包括如何形成研究問題以及應用適切的研究方法以尋求問題之答案；課程內容裝備學生閱讀與評估社會工作研究成果以及擬訂研究計劃大綱兩方面之能力、以增進社會工作實務者之知能。課程中介紹社會研究之設計、執行、分析與應用。
能力項目說明
本課程之設計在協助學生達成下列目的：
1.瞭解科學方法與社會科學研究之基本概念。
2.認識研究在社會工作實務之目的和貢獻。
3.應用理論、研究原則與方法至社會工作研究。
4. 瞭解適切的研究問題之選擇、假設之發展、研究設計、測量、抽樣、資料蒐集以及分析，其背後的邏輯和原由。
5.能夠形成一個有意義的研究問題、並設計合宜之方法以進行研究。
6.瞭解社會科學研究的倫理與兩難。
7.學習評量與使用社會工作方面既有之研究，並成為懂得分辨的使用者。

每位學生應於課前讀完指定的文章以充分參與課堂上之討論、並完成課程之要求。課程要求分為三部分：
平時作業 –以五個人為一小組進行
測量工具之選擇：就一個案主問題之評量分別由文獻中找 出兩個適當的測量量表(非整份問卷)，比較各項量表之信度與效度與適用狀況之後擇一較佳者，並說明理由。
期中報告 --- 以不超過五頁篇幅說明研究計劃書之研究領域、確切的研究問題、研究假設、與主要的依變項及自變項。
期末報告 --- 延續期中報告，依照Research Guide 中的大綱完成一份完整的研究計劃 報告長度約15頁並應依照美國 APA之專業文章格式 (超過頁數者扣 分)。
期末成績依下列三項評定：
