這是政治大學民族學研究所碩士班的核心課程，課程目的欲培養學生對民族誌研究方法的理論背景有基礎的認識，也對民族誌田野工作的操作方式能有完整瞭解，面對新冠疫情和全球化的衝擊，當代人類學民族誌研究和質性研究方法面臨何種困境和挑戰，當代人類家又發展出何種因應之道，這是當代民族誌研究需面對的重要議題。再者，近十年來智慧手機和數位媒體的快速發展和科技創新，特別是社群媒體的普及化和大眾化，以及個人化數位平台的新興傳播方式，改變了田野和田野工作的概念，以及什麼是田野筆記？什麼是民族誌？這樣的趨勢也促使研究者發展出更多元的民族誌研究方法。
本課程分為（上）：理論架構與田野實習、（下）學期。上學期課程著重於民族誌研究的理論架構、民族誌書寫方式、以及不同形式或文類的民族誌書寫方式，並介紹民族誌的資料收集方法，包括：參與觀察、訪談設計、研究倫理和審查、知情同意書。上學期課程並會透過小型田野實習（寒假期間進行）的機會，讓碩士班學生對如何進行田野工作有實際操作和練習的機會，以訓練他們能獨立進行後續個人論文田野研究的能力。
下學期課程著重於資料分析方法、不同領域的質性研究方法（歷史學、語言學、人類學、傳播學），包括：文本分析、口述歷史分析、語料分析、敘事分析、論述分析、談話分析、多模態分析。下學期課程並會探討當代民族誌方法之反思、困境和挑戰，說明當代民族誌研究者對於研究工作的反身性、以及如何面對民族誌研究的挑戰和困境。
本課程的另一目標是讓學生於修習上下學期的課程後，完成「個人研究計畫書」，內容需包含：研究目的、問題意識、研究問題、文獻回顧、研究對象、研究方法、田調設計的規劃和安排。並需要於政大民族所的大綱發表會公開發表。
上學期課程分成四個部分：
第一部分：人類學民族誌知識和方法論的學思基礎。
第二部分：人類學田野調查的研究方法。
第三部分：民族誌選讀和民族誌寫作練習。
第四部分：田野實習。（寒假進行）
