課程簡介Course Description

Our seminars offer multi-disciplinary perspectives both on institutions and jurisprudences, addressing controversial issues and important debates. Our aim is to bridge international and national dialogues and encourage students to observe conflicting interests.

This course is co-organized by the College of Law and the Department of Political Science, with Prof. Yao-ming Hsu and Prof. Vivianne Weng taking turns hosting each seminar. In view of students’ pragmatic needs for their future careers, Chinese Mandarin will be used as a supporting language for our discussions.

Nota bene: We welcome every student from all faculties of NCCU to join us. However, to follow this advanced course for both graduates and undergraduates, students must have completed studies of constitutional law or public international law.

    課程目標與學習成效Course Objectives & Learning Outcomes

International human rights law (IHRL) nowadays constitutes a fundamental element in governance at local, national, and global levels. The implementation of international human rights instruments in Taiwan and the rest of the world urges our students to be prepared for this contemporary challenge of the rule of law.

    Method & Assignments

Our seminar shall be composed of lectures, guided readings, and discussions.

    1. Becoming a member of our Google Classroom #2gwvnr2

    • We use this group as our communication platform. Each student shall become a member of it and activate its notification.

    2.    Designated readings and rapporteur’s guiding presentation

    • Every student shall finish the designated reading of the week before coming to the class.
    • At least 2 rapporteurs shall ensure the guided reading task with a brief presentation for the week marked with “guided reading”.
    • Rapporteurs of each guided reading session are organized by the course instructors, mixing students of different disciplinary backgrounds.
    • Each rapporteur presentation shall take no longer than 30 minutes, followed by a joint discussion session.

    3. Mid-term and term oral examinations

    • Instructors shall determine the oral examination order with the result of a random number generation one week before the examination day.
    • Each student draws a number to determine her/his test question and shall have 20 minutes to prepare her/his answer; discussions, consultations, or references are all allowed during these 20 minutes.
    • Each student shall orally present her/his answer within 5 minutes to the instructors in the examination room.
    • Instructors may intervene during the above presentation time; students are required to respond to these additional questions.

    4. “My Human Rights Practices” – individual project

    • Students are required to elaborate and execute a project on human rights practices during the semester. One can work alone or team up with another student for such a project.
    • Suggested options: internship, traineeship, volunteering, inquiry, survey, issue study, etc.; the last two weeks are reserved for the finalization of this individual project.
    • Students shall post their observations/experiences out of this individual project on our Google Classroom before 4 January 2024, in a “story-telling” way, whether with texts, pictures, slides, video, or audio recordings.
