西方政治哲學從奧古斯丁與聖多瑪斯提出的義戰論與自然法開始，及至當代的鄂蘭論革命與羅爾斯論社會正義，皆與基督教思想關係密切。因此，理解基督教神學的基本內涵，是掌握西方政治思想的必要途徑。本課程聚焦於現代政治哲學的神學起源。以中世紀的唯名論革命作為起點，進入文藝復興時代的人文主義，路德的宗教改革以及西伐利亞體制的建立，直到霍布斯與洛克以及他們對啟蒙運動政治思想的影響，探究基督教神學本身的變革如何促成了以「民族國家」之運作為核心關懷的現代政治哲學之興起。

修畢本課程的學生將能對西方政治思想與基督教神學之間的關聯性有一定掌握，從而對於何謂自然法、人性尊嚴、基本權利、平等、自由以及民主理念的思想根源，皆有適當的理解程度。亦可培養閱讀與分析文本的能力，並能藉由課堂報告學習陳述與解釋抽象概念的能力。
