佛教由印度與中亞傳播至中國後，繼續擴展至韓國與日本，在長久的傳播過程中，佛典的傳譯與解釋因為文化風土的不同而產生變化，形成東亞佛教獨自的特色，尤其和社會的互動更為東亞佛教的重要發展因素。
本課程探討東亞佛教與社會互動之關係，透過歷史、文學及藝術之脈絡，以及對知識分子、皇權等論辯議題之回應方式，介紹東亞佛教的發展過程。希望透過相關研究的研讀，討論東亞佛教文化的發展元素，並進行佛教研究主題之介紹，提供同學設計研究問題之範例。
