本課程著重在伊斯蘭傳統的淵源、歷史發展與思想流派的整體性介紹，探索主題包含：穆聖天啟的內涵、伊斯蘭初期哈里發政權的建立、三大教門－律法學、神哲學與蘇非主義的形成、中世紀以迄近現代西方與伊斯蘭世界的衝突，以及當代伊斯蘭復興運動的前因後果。
能力項目說明
本課程回歸伊斯蘭傳統的思想與歷史源頭，引導同學重新理解在不同的歷史與社會脈絡中發展的伊斯蘭信仰與文化的多元形式，並就全球視野與宏觀歷史的途徑來剖析當代伊斯蘭與西方世界衝突的內、外在因素，嘗試以伊斯蘭文明為主體來思索宗教傳統如何回應現代化、世俗化、全球化之挑戰，特別針對所謂「恐怖主義」的問題，對大眾媒體的伊斯蘭再現提出批判分析。期待修習本課程的同學以開放態度來重新思考伊斯蘭世界如何從本有的精神文明去尋找解決傳統與現代性之矛盾的方案，進而反省自身文明所面臨的相似問題，以及思考精神與物質文明相輔相成的可能性。
