目前全球三大官方語系分別為中文、西班牙文和英文，其中以西班牙文作為官方語言的國家約有二十一個，除西班牙外，大部份西班牙語系國家位於拉丁美洲。不過西班牙文在美國南部和大城市也相當普遍，約佔美國人口的五分之一，美國中學也將西班牙文列為重要外語課程。如果位於加勒比海的波多黎各未來成為美國第五十一州，屆時西班牙文將會成為美國第二官方語言。
能力項目說明
熟習西語者不但可在葡萄牙語系國家和當地人士溝通，學習其他拉丁語系國家語言也有便利性。與我國維持邦交的國家，有一半位於拉丁美洲，為增進選課同學未來在涉外工作的便利性，因此課程設計目標以發音、文法、閱讀和會話為主，每次上課接以西班牙語發音練習、文法、會話及國別讀本穿插進行。以期同學在修完二年課程後，具備開口講話的勇氣與實力。

本課程評分標準如下：課堂參與20%、期中考40%、期末考40%。若有考試舞弊或缺考，皆依學校相關規定處理；會話練習或課堂參與不足，則請教學助理定期追蹤。
