College English I/II is a two-semester course, designed to develop in students the abilities and attitudes to engage critically with the world. These abilities and attitudes include, in particular, English language proficiency and cross-cultural awareness. This College English I course will have an emphasis on fostering students’ confidence in communicating their thoughts in English, in both spoken and written forms. It will also focus on enhancing students' understanding of English-speaking cultures.
The expected goals are, upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1) understand everyday spoken English at normal speed;
2) describe an event and participate in discussions in English;
3) analyze and evaluate readings from a variety of texts;
4) understand issues concerning the local society and the wider world;
5) demonstrate cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity;
6) express ideas in writing using standard English.

Successful completion of the course is dependent on:
1. Class attendance; participation and performance in activities (30%)
2. Presentation and written assignments (30%)
3. Midterm exam (20%)
